Steel estimates that carry the load
before the beams go up.

Steel is unforgiving when the numbers are wrong. A missed connection plate, an under-ordered joist size, a tonnage calculation that didn't account for all the framing conditions on the drawings these aren't small errors. They stop jobs. At Remarkable Estimating, we go through your structural and miscellaneous metal scope piece by piece, member by member, so your bid reflects what the steel actually costs to fabricate, deliver, and erect.

What Is Metal Estimating?

Metal estimating is the process of taking off structural steel member by member (shapes, sizes and lengths converted to tonnage) along with connections, plates, embeds, lintels, stairs, railings, metal deck and miscellaneous metals, then pricing material, shop fabrication, coatings and erection labor. A steel takeoff is the quantity part of that work; the estimate adds pricing.

Remarkable Estimating Services, LLC, based in Hawthorne, California, prepares structural steel and miscellaneous metals takeoffs and cost estimates for steel fabricators, erectors, general contractors, developers and owners in all 50 states. We work remotely from your structural and architectural drawings and Division 05 specifications and deliver an itemized Excel or PDF estimate, typically within 48–72 hours. We are an estimating firm: we do not fabricate or erect steel.

For shop drawings, see our steel detailing services and the steel estimating and detailing guide. Rebar is covered in concrete estimating, and the whole building in our full-project cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.

Why Metal & Steel Estimating Is One of the Most Complex Takeoffs in Construction

Structural steel and miscellaneous metals look manageable on a set of drawings until you actually start counting. Wide flange sections come in multiple grades and weights per foot W8x31 and W8x48 are both 8-inch wide flanges, but they're priced and fabricated completely differently. Connection hardware, base plates, shear tabs, and anchor rods are easy to miss when you're focused on the primary members. Decking profiles vary by span table requirements and loads. And the difference between a shop-welded and field-bolted connection affects both fabrication cost and erection time in ways that don't show up on the drawings.

Then there's the miscellaneous metals scope stairs, landings, railings, ladders, grating, framing angles, embeds, lintels. These items are often scattered across multiple drawing sheets, frequently updated by addenda, and easy to miss in a fast takeoff. But they add up. On a mid-size commercial project, miscellaneous metals alone can represent a significant cost that a rushed estimator undervalued or skipped entirely.

We read structural drawings the way a steel fabricator does member by member, connection by connection and we price them against current market rates for your specific region. Because steel prices fluctuate, and a quote from six months ago doesn't protect your margin today.

The structural steel scope is where contractors are often hurt the most. Not because they can't read a drawing, but because a steel takeoff at bid speed is difficult to do right.

Every member, every connection, every pound of steel counted from your structural drawings, not estimated by weight per square foot.

How Our Metal Estimating Process Works

From your structural drawings to a finished, submission-ready steel estimate here's exactly how we work through a metal and steel takeoff.

  1. You send us your structural drawings and specs

Structural steel drawings, connection details, general notes, project specifications (Division 05), and any relevant addenda or RFIs. Steel schedules and material specs if they're available help us nail the grade and finish requirements before we start counting. If something is unclear or missing, we flag it upfront rather than assume our way through a steel scope.

PDF, CAD, or Bluebeam all formats accepted

  2. We separate structural steel from miscellaneous metals they're different estimates

Structural steel (primary framing, joists, decking) and miscellaneous metals (stairs, railings, grating, embeds) have very different cost profiles, lead times, and subcontractor scopes. Lumping them together creates a number that's impossible to break out when a steel sub asks what's included. We separate them from the start, price them independently, and deliver them as distinct line items.

Structural vs. misc. metals clearly separated

  3. Member-by-member digital takeoff connections included

Using PlanSwift or Bluebeam Revu, we measure every steel member by designation, length, and quantity. Connections get counted per the connection schedule or standard connection tables in the drawings. Decking gets measured by bay, with edge trim, pour stops, and shear stud quantities included. Nothing gets rolled into a linear foot rate that hides what's actually there.

    Member-level precision no lump-sum shortcuts

  4. Pricing at current market rates not last quarter's steel prices

Steel commodity prices move more than almost any other construction material. A takeoff priced to rates from six months ago can miss your actual cost by a wide margin in a volatile market. We price using current mill and service center pricing for your region, updated at time of estimate, with fabrication markups and erection labor reflecting local union or open-shop conditions as applicable.

Current market pricing updated per estimate

  5. Missed-item review, then clean delivery

Before your estimate leaves our hands, we check every member count, every connection quantity, and every cost line. On steel estimates, we specifically look for scope gaps between structural and architectural drawings embed plates that show on architectural but aren't on structural, lintels called out in masonry specs but not on the steel drawings. These cross-discipline items are where steel estimates bleed scope. We look for them before the estimate is delivered. Delivery is a clean, editable Excel or PDF with itemized quantities, unit weights, tonnages, unit costs, and a scope notes sheet.

Types of Metal & Steel Projects We Estimate

Whether it's a decorative steel staircase in a custom home or the full structural frame of a large distribution warehouse the depth of our takeoff process stays exactly the same.

Residential Metal Estimating

Custom steel staircases, decorative railings, structural steel beams and posts in wood-framed homes, steel moment frames for seismic applications, balcony and deck framing residential metal work is often small in volume but high in complexity. We give homebuilders and custom home contractors precise material and fabrication costs so there are no surprises when the steel shop quote comes in.

Commercial Steel Estimating

Office buildings, schools, hospitals, retail centers, mixed-use developments, parking structures commercial steel scopes are where the most money is at risk if the estimate isn't thorough. Multi-floor framing systems, composite decking, curtain wall connections, transfer beams, and complex miscellaneous metals packages all require careful, member-level takeoff. We handle the full scope, priced to your market, formatted for professional bid submission.

Industrial Steel Estimating

Warehouses, manufacturing plants, refineries, power generation facilities, and processing plants industrial steel is heavy, complex, and expensive to get wrong. Heavy wide flange columns and beams, large-span joist systems, mezzanine framing, pipe racks, equipment support structures, and extensive grating and platform packages. These projects demand an estimator who reads structural drawings fluently, not one working off a per-ton rule of thumb. That's what we do.

Why Steel Contractors Choose Remarkable Estimating

Not just what we say what it actually looks like when you work with us on a metal scope.

We Count Members, Not Just Tonnage

Estimating structural steel by tonnage per square foot is a budgeting tool, not a bid estimate. When you're submitting a number to a GC or owner, you need member counts, designations, and connection quantities not a multiplied approximation. We provide all of it, broken out by floor level and framing zone, so your bid is defensible line by line.

Miscellaneous Metals Don't Get Buried in Allowances

Stairs, platforms, railings, ladders, grating, embeds, framing angles we count every item as a separate line. Not as a percentage of structural steel, not as a lump-sum allowance. Each miscellaneous metals item is measured, priced, and presented so you know exactly what's in the number and what's not. That matters when a sub asks what's covered.

Current Steel Pricing Not Last Season's Rates

Hot-rolled steel prices can move significantly in a matter of months. If your estimate was built on rates from a previous bid cycle, it may not protect your margin at all. We price at current market rates for your region at the time of your estimate and we note the pricing date on every delivery so you know what the numbers are based on.

We Catch Cross-Discipline Scope Gaps

Some of the most expensive steel items live on non-structural drawings embed plates on architectural sheets, lintels in the masonry spec, equipment supports in the mechanical drawings. We cross-reference all available documents so those items don't fall between the cracks of a structural-only takeoff. If it's steel and it's on any drawing, it ends up in the estimate.

Fabrication and Erection Priced Separately

Shop fabrication cost and field erection cost are two very different line items with different subcontractors, different labor rates, and different risk profiles. We break them out separately rather than rolling them into a combined installed rate so you can value-engineer one without losing visibility on the other, and so your buyout conversations with steel subs start from an organized baseline.
